GOVERNANCE & POLITICS

  • SA regresses on international corruption index. Transparency International has released its latest CPI report tracking international perceptions of public sector corruption, showing that South Africa has regressed from position 43 in 2022 to 41 in 2023 on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). South Africa now falls into the category of flawed democracies, just one level above ‘nonfunctioning regimes’. State capture has cost the economy an estimated R500 billion, with the state capture commission finding there was a symbiotic relationship between the ANC and politically connected individuals and private companies. • DA calls for axing of Deputy President Mashatile. DA leader John Steenhuisen has threatened to take action should President Cyril Ramaphosa fail to fire his allegedly corrupt deputy, Paul Mashatile. The official opposition party says corruption allegations have piled up against Mashatile in recent months and Ramaphosa should axe him. The DA believes Ramaphosa’s non-action against his deputy, who stands accused of ‘grave acts of abuse of power and state capture’, will render him complicit. (Source)
  • Jacob Zuma suspended from ANC. The African National Congress announced on Monday it had suspended former president Jacob Zuma’s membership of the party with immediate effect, banning him from ANC activities. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said at a news conference Zuma had violated the ANC’s constitution by withdrawing support for the party and openly campaigning for the newly formed uMkhonto Wesizwe Party. A decision on Zuma’s possible expulsion will be taken after the upcoming general election. On 16 December 2023, Zuma made a public announcement that he cannot under good conscience vote for the current ANC under party president Cyril Ramaphosa. (Source)
